Does Your House Look Like This
I feel that there is too much advertising found on blog sites. People work so hard on their blogs, I almost feel it is a waste to infest so many beautiful sites with a countless number of advertisements. When you visit someone at their house, you aren’t bombarded with banners hanging from the ceilings, billboard advertisements in the backyard, and text ads written all over the walls. So why do people advertise so much on their blogs? Read this short (and humorous) article about advertising on your personal blogs.
So it is Friday afternoon, you’re getting off work a little early. Headed to the store to get chips, dip, beer… you’re having a lot of friends over to visit you at home. You want to get some good stuff at the store, pick up some charcoal and some meat. Have a few movies playing, or perhaps a good football game. You are the host for this visit, and you know… you want people to have a good impression of your house.
Before your expected guests arrive for the evening, do you go around the entire house and tack up advertisements on the walls, mirrors, windows, front door, back door, toilet seat, text ads written on toilet paper, text ads on towels, and the “Featured Ad of the month” inside your medicine cabinet in the bathroom? Uh, Nooo!
So if you don’t put advertisements throughout your house for your visitors to see when they visit, then why do you do it on your blog site, web page, web site…
or also commonly called: your HOME page….
Why Do You Advertise On Your Blog?
Why??? Well, you want to make some money! And you know what? There is nothing wrong with that. Seriously! Make money online… do it! Sell to your friends and family… they are just that… friends and family, or people that trust, care, and are eager to purchase things that you recommend buying.
The problem is the method people use in attempt to sell. What you see everyday on every site is Google Adsense this, Google Adsense that… click this, click that, try this free, 30 day trial, make money online, etc..
Do People See Advertisements Like This In Your Home
[SIT HERE] BUY NOW! Get Paid To Watch Football At My House Make Money Sitting On My Toilet! In 30 Seconds or Less! Mow My Yard, And Receive A Free Ride To Work! Too Drunk?… Crash On My Couch - First Four Hours Are Free! Your Ass Goes Here. Do half the people even know where ads on their site link visitors to? I have used Google Adsense for almost two years… I never click the ads on my site to investigate the content that is being advertised… I should! A lot of people do click on their own ads in attempt to try to make more money (but that’s a complete different story)… but even those people don’t really read these ads… generally speaking, of course!
And that is why I think 9 out of every 10 blogger that try to make money online fail. People trust what you write, they learn who you are and what you are all about. And honestly, my first impression of the majority of blog sites online are the same as your first impression of the graphic I included on the top of this page. And if I went to visit a friend at their house and saw advertisements and slogans similar to the funny (sorry!!) examples I provided in the above paragraph… I can’t even imagine what my thoughts would be. I would probably head straight back to my car with a huge grin on my face and slowly shaking my head, wondering if my friend had lost his freaking mind.
Sell online, but sell smart. Sell things that you know about, personally believe in, and would personally buy yourself (if you haven’t already done so). Give people reasons why you are selling a certain product or service. An example would be if you purchase a video game and really like it a lot. Write a blog about it and tell everyone why you like it… invite your viewers to read the reviews on Amazon and tell them about a certain promotion that is being carried out.
The art of selling online is honestly, Not Selling Online. Blog about the things you like… blog about the things you have… blog about the things you want to buy… blog about the things that you will be purchasing… provide references to these products where your viewers can learn more information about it (customer reviews and customer interactions… chat rooms, message boards, etc..)
The most ineffective thing you can do, is slap a bunch of advertisements on your site and expect people to buy. It is lazy and not effective.
Bottom line is: The Viewers First Impression. Who are you? Do you care about me? Or, do you care about the contents in my wallet?
or… hey this guy is cool. He knows his stuff… pretty smart guy. Wow… he wrote a page about his flawless installation of Quickbooks and how easily he learned how to use the program. Wow… I need Quickbooks! Hey! He provided me with the link to the page that offered him the exact same “Great” deal he got for Quickbooks… What a nice guy! I am going to bookmark his site!… I trust him!

I wanted to also mention…
There is nothing wrong with using Google Adsense… You can easily control which ads are being displayed on your site. People generally don’t do this. You can add filters, making sure certain content doesn’t appear.
Also, you can discuss in detail about a product or service that is being displayed on your on your site. You can’t break TOS rules and say, “Hey I got Google Adsense, click my ads so i can get money!”
But you can talk about products… and either display PPC ads that are relevant to your content, or display affiliate marketing products that pay a commission when people buy.
I just wanted to mention that, because I used Google Adsense pretty heavily in the article… and I just wanted to be clear that Google Adsense is a great program if used correctly.

What??!! Thilak,
I am so surprised to hear you say that. Seriously, what you are saying is that if there were no systems for making money blogging, you wouldn’t do it?
Wow… I have sites that I make money on, but I don’t make money here and don’t want to!
This is my personal blog baby! I am here to meet people, help people, and have fun with writing. I love to write and with the invention of blogs… my writing life is awesome!
No one listens to me at home when I talk (because I am geeky and no one understand what I talk about) and with my blogs I can connect with people that understand the things I talk about and can contribute their opinions, feedback and carry a satisfying conversation.
Thilak,
You have at the moment 225 feedburner subscribers (one including myself), come on man… I know what you said isn’t true. You aren’t in it just for the money! I know you too well and I can see your dedication in your articles…
You would do Tech-Buzz for free if there wasn’t a way to make money!

I agree with Garry here. Although I’m using adsense on the main site, I won’t be putting any up on the blog because I’m using it as a way to promote the main site as well as post information that I personally find interesting. I believe that content is king and content that helps people is the main reason for blogging.
Garry, great site and great posts.
